Regional Conference Report: Producing Efficacious Medicine: Quality, Potency, Lineage, and Critically Endangered Knowledge

A regional meeting was jointly organised by IASTAM’s Himalayan Desk and the Himalayan Amchi Association (HAA). The eight-day workshop, “Producing Efficacious Medicine: Quality, Potency, Lineage, and Critically Endangered Knowledge”, took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 5-12 December 2011. It brought together nearly 40 practitioners of Sowa Rigpa (the Tibetan ‘science of healing’). They came from Ladakh, India, culturally Tibetan regions of northern Nepal, and Tibetan regions of China (Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province), and joined four anthropologists to talk about, but also demonstrate, their knowledge of medicines and their preparation.
